<image:title>Career Spotlights - Je'Nen M. Chastain, MBA, Associate AIA - My Passion</image:title>
<image:caption>My career in architecture showed me that I was drawn to things others weren't as passionate about, including marketing, communication, business development, leadership training, public speaking, and professional development. I saw how my training in architecture elevated and complimented my passion for business. By recognizing my interests and strengths, I saw an opportunity to create a company that met a need in the industry. Apostrophe Consulting has an underlying mission of helping architects grow their businesses and leadership capabilities. “Starting out, a career in architecture may seem linear from designer to licensed architect; however, there are many hidden career paths in this field. Don't let the path define you. Take time to figure out what is important to you, what your strengths are, and create a path that connects you to those things.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Career Spotlights - Je'Nen M. Chastain, MBA, Associate AIA - The Power of Storytelling</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to running Apostrophe Consulting, I also co-host a podcast called Practice Disrupted. This work enables me to collaborate with diverse professionals with unique perspectives on what architecture is and what it can be. Since starting the show, I've seen personal growth in my public speaking and interview skills and unlocked a creative passion for storytelling. “A running theme in our podcast Practice Disrupted relates to divergent careers leveraging an education in architecture. These guests all share a common willingness to explore and test out new opportunities in their careers. Don't be afraid to take risks and experiment in pursuit of your dreams, those risks often lead to new discoveries.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Some of my earliest memories are of telling everyone that I wanted to be an architect. I was obsessed with learning everything about design and how it impacts our world. I loved that the built environment, through a building's function, ingenuity, and beauty, could be a service to the community. As an architect, I'm here to dream, discover, innovate, and challenge, all to be a part of a design process that pushes boundaries, creates art, and leads to relevant architecture and meeting clients' needs throughout the design process.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>What advice can you give to graduates about career paths based on your experience? “What we do as designers is innately difficult yet rewarding. Work diligently and with great rigor on the tasks at hand. Remember to stay positive and most importantly, have fun! None of this is worth it unless that is a huge part of your experience,” What advice can you give to young professionals who are struggling with the traditional career path of architecture? “Early on, remember to be patient along your path, adaptable in the process, listen intently, and learn as much as you can. But also, you are your own best advocate. You should always raise your hand and open your heart to action to create your own opportunities within the studio environment.” Who inspires or motivates you? How do you remain motivated? “The explorations and experiences with our design teams and clients motivate me on a daily basis. Ultimately, I love the work and the fact that architecture finds a way to speak to our hearts without asking our permission. There is great power in that.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Career Spotlights - Jennifer T. Matthews, Associate AIA - A Creative’s Xperience</image:title>
<image:caption>When I graduated from architecture school in 2013, I was fortunate to be elected as the National Vice President of The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) by its membership. I was also being recruited by two very different Master’s programs, one for Urban Planning and the other for Integrated Design and Building Construction. The common denominator of these opportunities was that they were design-based, leadership-based, and exceptional platforms to establish a successful career. I was one of the fortunate few who had multiple options; whereas, many others did not know which way to turn. I think back and realize how little we discussed what we would like to do post-graduation. The assumption was that we would all graduate, work for an architecture firm, and get licensed. I also realize how many students based their post-graduate careers and education on the trends of the faculty at the University, which was urban planning at the time. The reality was that a singular career path was not the best fit for everyone. Some colleagues were fortunate to work in an architecture firm, but others weren’t hired before graduation and the months following. For those individuals who did not land a job in a firm, they had very little guidance on how to get on the right track or navigate a career path that best utilized their skill set. Some pursued graduate degrees in urban planning and never used the degree after acquiring the student loan debt. My underlying concern for the professional development of architecture students and graduates followed me to the AIAS national position and beyond. I had an interest in professional development but did not feel like I had an unbiased platform to highlight traditional and nontraditional career paths. I needed my own platform to really address the tough conversations surrounding careers in architecture and design.</image:caption>

I enjoyed the process of studying patterns and context in the environment and translating that to how a person moves and experiences a space. “You have a great amount of transferable skills that you learn in school that apply to many design careers. Take the chance to explore roles outside of the traditional firm setting if you are undecided about where to start your career.” Q&A What advice can you give to young professionals who are struggling with the traditional career path of architecture? (Ie. Feeling like creative outlets are limited.) “The creative outlets are out there. You have to tap into what makes you passionate in general and use that as a start to fuel your creativity. I usually do my best design work when I am able to pour myself out in my non-design creative endeavors.” Who inspires or motivates you? How do you remain motivated? “I have an amazing group of mentors that inspires me today. My friends and my family motivate me and remind me of my why often. Having a great support system around me helps me stay focused on getting licensed and pursuing my goals.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>How has life changed since you've become licensed? Have you faced any obstacles since becoming licensed? Getting licensed was a huge relief to reach a lifelong goal and get the time back that had previously been dedicated to studying. I think similarly to a lot of recently licensed architects, I also felt an immediate "goal void" where something so big had been accomplished, and now I was left looking around for another next step. After licensure, professional goal setting became a lot less clearly defined and I realized that this is where I needed to set out to actually design a career that I defined, rather than what was defined by the profession. With more of an interior architecture focus, how does your day-to-day work differ from that of an architect that might work in a typical architecture firm? I've found interior architecture to be more creative on a daily basis than base-building architecture, I think because the schematic design phase is a much larger percentage of the overall project in interior architecture. I still love the technical sides of design and enjoy working on construction drawings as needed, but the ratio of design to documentation is much more comfortable for me on the interiors side.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How did you become involved in the Army National Guard? After finishing my fourth year of Architecture school at Auburn University, I needed to find a way to finance my fifth and final year. I couldn’t get a student loan so I had to pivot on my path to architecture. I explored many different options and joining the Army National Guard seemed like a perfect fit, though I had never thought about joining the military before. I do come from a military background, as my grandfather served in the Army, my mother served in the Air Force, and my brother still serves in the Army National Guard so I felt even more confident in my decision to join. My original plan was to pay for school using the Army National Guard educational benefits, complete my contract, and enjoy my Architecture career. Nine years later, including three years past my contract, I still enjoy both paths, balancing my Guard career and my Architecture career. In fact, sometimes, they go hand in hand. Both take a great amount of critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and leadership. I can honestly say that I would not be as good an Officer if I wasn’t an Architect, and I would not be as good an Architect if I wasn’t an Officer in the Army National Guard. Why did you pursue architecture? And what inspired your interest in healthcare architecture? Growing up, I was around construction all of the time. My whole family are tradesmen and contractors. I traveled with my father over summers going to all of his jobs. He would always tell me how much he disagreed with Architects. That just made me want to be one so I could be the intermediary and bridge the communication gap between the two. I knew then, that I was going to be an Architect. Seeing buildings transform and evolve from little drawings on paper always fascinated me. My first job out of school was designing custom houses. I truly enjoyed it, yet I wanted a little bit more of a challenge. Healthcare seemed to be that challenge, and SS&A Design Collective specializes in this form of architectural design. Combining a truly important function and an appealing design is quite that challenge. There are so many codes and criteria that not only require technical skills but also a mind for creative designs. I also feel that what I am doing is not only beautiful but also helping people who need it. What obstacles presented themselves when attempting to cross career paths between Guard involvement and working full-time for an architecture firm? I have been in the Guard the whole time that I have been an Architect, so I seem to know no other way. But is does have some challenges.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What advice can you offer current ARE test takers? Take your time and go at a pace that works best for you. I failed my fourth exam which was a huge blow for me and affected my confidence in test taking. I was able to overcome that obstacle by talking to my peers many of whom also failed one or two of their exams. They helped me to motivate me to try again. In terms of work/life balance, I was lucky to have an employer that was very understanding of the process and I knew that I wanted to maintain some of my social life, so I took breaks from studying during the summer and over the holidays. How did you remain motivated throughout the process? I think that having coworkers and friends also taking the exams helped me stay motivated throughout the process. We encouraged and supported each other, and I still try to do that for others I know still going through the process Do you have a newfound hobby that's currently consuming the time you'd otherwise be studying for your exam? <image:caption>What attracted you to healthcare design? Designing for humanity at its most vulnerable has a compelling sense of purpose. It's also the one market sector that has the most resources dedicated to emerging professionals, research, travel and conference participation, which grants greater access and opportunities for everyone. Why behavioral health? For me, it's a confluence of events. My Master's thesis delved into PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury and other invisible wounds that affect friends returning from serving abroad in uniform. This coupled with opportunities to develop the VA's IP Mental Health Design, design a small autism clinic for Kaiser and other influences lead me down this path for a specialty that few dive deeply into. The profound impact the built environment can have upon your mental health is worth exploring more deeply as the topic is being elevated in the public consciousness. In much the same manner that we have negatively impacted our environment, we treat our bodies poorly, to think nothing of our minds. For me, behavioral health design is experimental and very experiential, harmonizing healthcare spaces that blend evidence-based design with empathy for the human condition. It's a challenging field that I've found deeply rewarding. What is the benefit of declaring a healthcare (or general design) specialization? It certainly gives you a sense of purpose and focus. Few if any professionals have the opportunity to dive deeply into a niche focus, fewer still have the drive to do so. Going beyond passion to finding purpose in your work can set you apart from your peers. The ability to compound knowledge and stand out as a subject matter expert has value if it's meeting an unmet need.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Many architecture students have an initial interest in art but don't maintain that interest once the degree program starts, or afterward for that matter. How have you maintained your interest in art over the years? I had a strong affinity for art growing up and through undergrad. I was happy to carry that on through my graduate program and into my career. I still draw daily and keep several sketchbooks. Learning in China, wow! What sparked your interest to learn Chinese? I studied Chinese while in undergrad as part of a scholarship program and was able to study there during the summer also. While I was there, I decided that it would be a great opportunity to develop myself both personally and professionally if I stayed and put the work in to really refine my language skills. In the beginning, this meant putting in the time and studying. Once I had a good grasp of the language, a lot of doors opened. I ended up getting a full scholarship for grad school and job offers that allowed me to speak both languages and continue working on design projects.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How has life changed since you've become licensed? Have you faced any obstacles? I certainly have more time now that my mornings and weekends are not filled with studying! In all seriousness - prior to becoming licensed, I was on a trajectory, professionally, where my leadership and responsibility on projects was increasing. I think that becoming licensed has certainly continued to support that trajectory of project leadership - possibly even slightly accelerated that. Beyond projects though, the biggest change that I have noticed is the opportunity to give back, share knowledge, and mentor. It is incredibly exciting to see my peers who are pursuing licensure currently and be able to share any pieces of insight that I can with them as they navigate their own process and journey. One question our students are typically interested in is what's it like to work for a small firm versus a large firm. Can you share any insight? My first internship was with a small design-build residential firm in Durham, North Carolina. I spent the summer learning from architects, engineers, and contractors all under one firm - seeing how drawings and models were produced in-office to actually demo-ing a wall or laying tile in the field. It was a career changing experience and was the moment that I realized I wanted to be an architect. Looking back, the breadth of my experience and lessons in forming relationships in this industry was something I think was absolutely supported by working over the summer for a small firm. Today, I work for a large firm with over 23 offices and 1400 people worldwide. Every day, I have the opportunity to make connections with people and for projects on a global scale. There have been amazing opportunities, especially these last two years, to remove any barriers that might exist due to physical proximity and connect with mentors and peers - no matter where any of us may be located. At the same time, even with this global scale, our local office feels and operates like a medium-sized office.</image:caption>
